8.2.20 - The Church of Emotional Manipulation (Kenny Camacho)
SCRIPTURE: 2 Samuel 6, Psalm 1, & Colossians 3
REFLECTION/DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
What have your experiences been with “emotionalism” in church? What is good about having a “high emotion” environment? What might be bad or dangerous about it?
What do you think the emotional environment at Revolution ought to be like? Why? What changes in our environment have you seen over time, if you have been at Revolution for awhile? What is our emotional environment like now?
Kenny said that we should be emotionally incarnational, meaning we should be fully committed to both the head and the heart as a church. What do you think about this? How do you think we can meet this challenge?
The first of our Action Steps this morning is to let our emotions lead us to knowledge. One way we can do this is by paying attention to the theological claims found in the songs we sing and prayers we pray. Read through the lyrics of one of the songs for this week: what ideas about God do they contain? What can you learn?
The second Action Step is to let our knowledge find emotional expression. Do you ever struggle with this? How can we explore what our faith makes us feel this week? How can we lean into our relationships with others to help us stay accountable to this challenge?
What role can discomfort play in a church community? How can we be intentionally uncomfortable at Revolution...without being alienating or upsetting? How can you play a healthier part in our church community moving forward?
