At the root of the Christmas story is a profound mystery: why does any of this happen at all? Why is God intent on being reconciled to his creation? Why is he committed to its restoration? What reasons could he possibly have to forgive? The one and only answer to these questions is love. In God’s behavior towards us, we see and experience the fullness of something we all spend our lives seeking: the inescapable, unshakeable, and undefeatable love of another. God teaches us how to love by first loving us, not only from a distance, but also as one of us. Christmas is a time to allow ourselves to better understand the love of God as Jesus reveals it to us and to better feel the love of God as the body of Christ, God’s Church, shares it with us.
